Short-Term Running Goals:

I ran my first 5K race on May 5th, 2012 in 26:40. I want to continue to improve on my times. My main reason for starting to run and ride my bike was to improve my overall health. I am currently 217 lbs ( I was 254 at my heaviest) my goal weight by the end of March is 200. By the end of October when I will run my second Half Marathon I want to be to my goal weight of 180. After I lose the weight I will re-evaluate my goals and look more at race time goals.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Remain healthy by continuing a regular routine of running and bike riding.

Personal:

I married my beautiful wife on 8/27/1982. We have been blessed with six wonderful children (5 daughters(18-29) and 1 son(7)), and six grandchildren. I started running in Jan 2012 after 32 years of not running. When I first started I couldn't run half a mile without stopping. By the end of September I completed my first half marathon and my longest run of 15 miles. I still have a lot to improve but at least it is a start.

My first 10 K Race. I started out a little faster then I had planned because it was a slight downhill and I knew that after the first half mile there would be a steady uphill for the next 2.5 miles. I was able to get to the end up the uphill portion in a reasonable time and then was able to pick up the pace for the next 3 miles on the return and then just cruised into the finish. I wasn't really pushing for my best time because it was more of training run while getting ready for the Layton Half Marathon.

Felt good but at about 6.5 miles I tripped and skinned my knee up.

My first half marathon, my training and previous 10K time at the Classic led me to shoot for a time of under 2 hours. For the first 9 miles the course was very level and I maintained a fairly consistant 9 minutes per mile. After that the course began a slow but steady uphill for the next 3 and a half miles. My times dropped closer to 10 minute miles. I don't know why it is but I really struggle with any uphill. I know that my weight has something to do with it. I really need to lose another 30 pounds before my next race next March. The last half mile was slightly downhill and I was able to bring my pace back below 9 minutes. I was disapointed to not reach my goal but was really glad to complete the race. I only wish I had kept running after High School instead of waiting until I was 50 to start running again.
